About Me
About Me
I am a South African trained, certified and registered Plastic surgeon. I graduated my undergraduate medical degree of MBChB with first class honours from the University of Cape Town Medical School, and received prizes for academic achievement in Surgery (1988), and was the top final year student in Paediatrics (1989).
After completing my internship at Groote Schuur Hospital (venue of the first heart transplant), I travelled abroad, doing locum work in the UK for a period, before joining P&O/ Princess Cruises as ships doctor aboard luxury liners. On returning to Cape Town, I commenced training in general surgery at Groote Schuur Hospital, ultimately moving over to specialize in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, and completing a 4 year dedicated training programme. After passing my Specialist Board Examination in Plastic Surgery, I remained on as consultant plastic surgeon at Groote Schuur Hospital, before moving into private practice at City Park Hospital (since renamed the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital) – a large private hospital in the central business district of Cape Town.
I was actively involved in the Dept. of Plastic Surgery at Cape Town University, through my attachment to the Red Cross Childrens Hospital Cleft Palate Unit from 2001 through 2017 when all part time contracts came to an end. My commitment to the Cleft Unit included an alternate week clinic and operating list where these birth deformities are repaired both functionally and cosmetically, whilst teaching trainee junior plastic surgeons to master the techniques. In many respects, repair of the cleft lip and palate deformity represents the ultimate marriage of form, function and aesthetics in the gentle art of plastic surgery. I am also a volunteer Plastic Surgeon with Operation Smile, a US based global charity offering free cleft surgery to those not fortunate enough to have local expertise in repair, and have been privileged to be part of surgery missions since 2012 to Rwanda, Malawi, Ghana, Madagascar and Mozambique.
I am registered with, or affiliated to the following professional bodies:
- Registered as a specialist plastic and reconstructive surgeon with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
- Member of the Society of Rhinoplasty Surgeons of South Africa (SORSSA)
- Member of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS)
- International member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)
- Fellow of the College of Surgeons of South Africa in Plastic Surgery
- Fellow of the Royal college of Surgeons in Glasgow
- Registered with the General Medical Council in the UK (overseas list)
In addition, I have previously successfully completed the American Federal Licensing Examination in New York (FLEX). I often travel to the USA to attend congresses, and to visit and learn from some of the world leaders in the field of Plastic Surgery, and have been privileged to spend time, in the past, with Drs John Reinisch, Rollin Daniel, Ian Jackson, and Rod Rohrich, to name but a few. Most recently, and via a friendship borne out of Operation Smile missions, I have been fortunate to spend time with some of the best exponents of preservation rhinoplasty, notably Dr Bart, from whom I have learned and continue to learn about this new approach to primary rhinoplasty.
My private practice comprises of about 90% cosmetic surgery and encompasses the full spectrum of cosmetic surgery, including: breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast lift, body contouring, tummy tucks, liposuction, facelifts etc. I have a special interest in rhinoplasty surgery (nose jobs), and labial reduction / labiaplasty. I also performmany “non-surgical” procedures – Restylane lip enhancement and Botox being the most common.
In 2012, I was included in the very prestigious Tatler Magazine’s Beauty & Cosmetic Surgery Guide.
Scientific Publications:
I have published several articles in international, peer-reviewed Plastic Surgery journals, notably Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, and Annals of Plastic Surgery .
Most recently, I have had the honour of being appointed as an Associate Editor for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (Global Open) Journal – the only South African Plastic Surgeon in full time private practice to have received this honour! Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery is without doubt, the leading & definitive Plastic Surgery Journal in the world.
